Public libraries throughout Oklahoma will be the place to go for the 2012 Summer Reading adventure during June and July.
Grade school children may join any time during the program dates and participate by reading books and attending story times and other special activities.
In this year's theme, children and teens will discover the wonders of the night—both real and imagined. Children will rally around the slogan "Dream Big: Read," while teens will "Own the Night." Both programs will provide inspiration for library programs and a summer filled with reading adventures for young Oklahomans.
Every summer public libraries become the focal point for many children and teens looking for programs and activities to fill their free summer days. Books can take us anywhere in the universe using our most precious vehicle, imagination.
Some libraries sponsor reading contests, and award prizes to participants who meet their designated reading goals. Others have special programs for preschoolers and adults.
Most libraries hold story times and craft activities, with parents and siblings often joining in. Call or visit your local public library and check on the Oklahoma Summer Reading Program schedule in your community.
The Oklahoma Department of Libraries has partnered with the Oklahoma College Savings Plan to sponsor the Be Creative @ Savings for College Summer Reading Program Sweepstakes. One child and one teen participating in the summer reading program will each win $2,500 to start a college savings plan. Each winner's library will receive $1,000. Visit your local library, or www.ok4saving.org, for your chance to enter!
Oklahoma's Summer Reading Program is created each year by ODL's Office of Library Development.
